John Carpenter (Escape from New York, Halloween) directed this fun and exciting cult action sci-fi thriller starring Kurt Russell (doing his best to evoke John Wayne) as a buff truck driver who gets in way over his head when he helps his best friend retrieve his fiancee from an evil Chinese sorceror who is keeping her prisoner in a creepy underground lair below San Francisco's Chinatown. In addition to Russell's hilarious tongue-in-cheek performance, there are memorable performances by Kim Cattrall, Dennis Dun, James Hong, Victor Wong, Kate Burton, Peter Kwong, Suzee Pai, and Jeff Imada. Although the movie was a box office disappointment, it has gained a huge cult following over the years thanks to the good actors, inside references to classic films, Carpenter's stylish action, and his driving and unforgettable music score.
